Ecstasy
The name ecstasy (or XTC) originally referred to products containing MDMA (3,4-methylene-dioxy-methamphetamine), which is the molecule responsible for its psychoactive effects.
Forms
Ecstasy takes the form of tablets, in range of sizes, colours and designs. Nowadays, the term XTC is often associated with a wide and undefined range of pills and tablets with psychoactive effects.
Effects
Ecstasy, containing MDMA, affects how people feel and how they perceive reality. It gives a sensation of energy and performance, and reduces feelings of tiredness and hunger. It promotes the desire to socialise and communicate with others. The phase of excitement is always followed by a phase of disillusionment.
Risks
The biggest danger is that people never know exactly what the tablet contains. They do not know what they are consuming. Some tablets do not contain MDMA, while others contain a high dose or include even more dangerous substances.
The most common side effects after taking ecstasy are related to dehydration. It is important to drink water regularly. In contrast, drinking alcohol with ecstasy is strongly discouraged.
Dangerous combinations
Mixing ecstasy with other drugs is dangerous. The effects of different substances are cumulative and amplify each other. These combinations pose a serious risk to health.
