In the event of an accident

Protect the victim and make the location safe

To avoid further accidents, never put yourself in danger and make sure you protect the victim and make the accident location safe.

As a general rule, the injured person should not be moved, unless they are in danger.

Dial 112 and follow these steps

  • Dial 112 for an ambulance, the fire brigade or the police.
For urgent police assistance, dial 113.
  • Do not hang up. Wait calmly for an operator to answer.
  • Provide precise information to get help quickly:
    • give your first name, surname and telephone number and say where you are calling from
    • briefly and clearly describe what has happened and who is involved
    • indicate the precise location (an exact address if possible) where the emergency services should go
    • say how many people have been injured
  • Give clear and succinct answers to all the questions the operator asks.
  • Follow the advice given by the operator.
  • Only hang up when the operator asks you to do so.

Perform first aid

If you know how to administer first aid, do so.

If you do not, do not touch the victim, unless you need to protect them from a more serious risk, for example if an unconscious person is trapped in a car that has caught fire.
