Coverage of vaccines in Luxembourg
In Luxembourg, all vaccinations listed in the vaccination schedule are free of charge for patients (as part of universal vaccination and vaccination for specific target groups).
Vaccines are purchased directly by the Health Directorate, which then distributes them to doctors on an on-demand basis. Patients only need to visit their doctor (or pharmacy for the COVID-19 vaccine) to receive the vaccine and pay the consultation fee. In practice, if patients go to a pharmacy with a prescription from their doctor for one of the vaccines included in the vaccination schedule, they will not be reimbursed.
It is up to the doctor to order them.
There are two exceptions to this procedure:
- The seasonal flu vaccine
- The pneumococcal vaccine for adults
These vaccines must be collected by the patient from the pharmacy on the basis of a prescription written by the doctor in order to be free of charge.
The patient must therefore first go to the pharmacy to obtain the vaccine free of charge and then go to their doctor to have the vaccine administered and pay the consultation fee.
Vaccinations given for travel are at the patient's expense.
